Specs for noses. A short guide for specs selection.

If you have a long or large nose: Select a frame with the bridge in a solid colour, set fairly low down on the frame. A heavy frame helps to create the illusion of a smaller nose.

If you have a short nose: Choose a frame with a transparent bridge set fairly high. Spectacles without lower rims help a lot to look better. Even the gradient frames, darker at the top and paling towards the bottom are also good.

If you have a shiny nose: First make up your nose so that it has a good matt surface. Choose a frame with a slim bridge. As slim as possible and make sure that the fit is good otherwise, you’ll wear away the benefits of foundation.

Avoid blinking In the sun: Sunglasses are must because screwing up eyes against the sun causes premature wrinkling of facial skin. For effectiveness, sunglasses should filter 85% to 90% of transmitted light. If you can see your eyes clearly reflected in a mirror, while wearing your sunglasses, it means they are too light. The ideal lens colour is grey. You can also buy lenses which are sensitive to light. They lighten or darken according to the sun’s brightness.

Into shape: When choosing sunglasses, consider your face shape. Even for choosing spectacles (see above).

A lens for every purpose: It’s a good idea to choose plastic lenses for sports, due to their greater resistance to impact. For skiing or water skiing, choose glasses which are designed particularly to absorb ultra-violet light. In a scorching climate, opt for sunglasses that do cut out ultra-violet light but absorb more infra-red. Polarized lenses are good for glare conditions when selling and driving. However, they will also show up the toughening patterns on the car windscreen, which can be distracting.

Quality check: To check on the quality of the lens on sunglasses, hold them out at arm’s length. Look through each lens separately at a slim vertical object such as a door post or window frame. Then rotate the lens slightly, either by twisting your wrist to and fro or rotating your hand and arm in a small circle. If the lens is of acceptable quality, the vertical image will remain true. If it seems to move or waver, the quality is poor.

For the children: If your children are going to wear sunglasses. It’s important to buy them the same quality as you would buy for yourself and select safety lenses made of either fibre or toughened glass. However, sunglasses are not usually necessary for young eyes because a child’s eye is quick to adapt to changing conditions of light, and so does not require glare protection to the same extent as an adult.
